1400_full.jpg (26391 bytes)This is a long-sword, found in the River Thames near London Bridge. It is believed to be of English origin, made sometime around the year 1400. By this time, there was a need for swords able to penetrate the new plate armour, which explains the diamond cross-section of the blade. The sword has inventory number IX 16. It has a length of 1190 mm (47"), with a blade-length of 927.5 mm (36,5"). The sword weighs 1535 gram (3 lbs 6 oz) and is well-balanced. This sword is described on p.167 in Records of the Medieval Sword by Ewart Oakeshott.
